To paraphrase a man who puts his life on the line every day to protect his community: Does a bullet feel any different if it’s fired in, say, Lyndhurst, than it does in Paterson? Know how many cops have been killed in the line of duty in Lyndhurst? Four. In Paterson? The same.

Top of the heap in cop salaries, the newspaper said, is Bergen County — coincidentally one of the wealthiest counties in the nation. In fact, the story began with a cop in Closter, literally up the road from where I live.

You know how often I’ve seen Closter police respond to accidents and other incidents? A lot. Sometimes they’re dealing with dead people inside wrecked vehicles, other times with domestic disputes and sometimes with weapons calls. At no time can they be 100 percent that a seemingly routine incident won’t turn into a dangerous confrontation.

Ask police in Glen Rock, where a drunken man threatened to shoot three officers, then got into a fistfight with them. Or in tiny Elmwood Park, where a man with a loaded shotgun kept a SWAT team at bay for nearly three hours.

Then again, you could try New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro:

After rushing to a report of a vehicle stuck in a ditch, two of his officers came up against a familiar face — that of 59-year-old Daniel Cardinali, who just weeks earlier tangled with patrolmen sent to his house.

This time, Cardinali began swinging a club before he was subdued — the eighth time this summer a police officer in tiny, working-class New Milford was attacked.

“When people complain about how much officers are paid, they should ask themselves if they could stand up to situations such as these and conduct themselves as professionally as did these officers,” Papapietro said. “They should ask themselves if they could even keep from running away.”

I’ve been in journalism 30+ years and I never saw a colleague do anything beyond ask questions, take notes or spend hours writing a story. I worked the streets many of those years — even had a knife put to my throat in a Perth Amboy housing project while on an assignment late one weekend night. How many other “journalists” adding police salary figures to their stories can say the same?

Let’s imagine, for a moment, a state without arbitration, where legions of law enforcement officers simply walk off the job. First thing anyone would do is beg them to come back.

And not just to combat crime. READ MORE....

Then there's this:

Police statewide forced to pay for NJ pension abuses, PBA president says

Posted by: Jerry DeMarco Tags: COLA, Gov. Unfunded liabilities exploded and combined with a failing economy and pension investments, and what was once an over-funded pension system soon became, in the Governor’s words, “unsustainable.”

But sometimes the facts don’t get in the way of good politics.

The Governor’s mastery of storytelling has rewritten the State’s pension history. So when the pension and health benefit reform law was signed in 2011 and the champagne corks were popped in some circles around the State that public employees were finally put in their place, we were told to be thankful that our pensions were finally “saved” and that the increased employee contributions would only help restore fiscal soundness to the pension fund. READ MORE....

Respectfully,

JerryD

Jerry DeMarco
Publisher/Editor
CLIFFVIEWPILOT.COM
GerardJDeMarco@gmail.com
201.943.2794

Forum: New Jesey Pension, Benefits, and Legislation

Edison PD Capt.'s home fire bombed

http://goo.gl/cgt2b

A gas can or Molotov c*cktail was used to fire bomb the home of a veteran Edison Police captain and close ally of the township’s police chief early Monday, forcing the victim, his wife and children to flee to safety as their Monroe Township residence burned, law enforcement sources told The Star-Ledger.
Mark Anderko, a 24-year veteran of the Edison Police Department, and his family were not hurt in what officials called a "horrific, cowardly act," but the attack left police leaders shaken and angered.

The New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association announced a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the attack, and the Middlesex Prosecutor’s Office is spearheading an investigation into the suspected arson.

The blaze started when a homemade fire bomb, possibly a Molotov c*cktail or gas can, was detonated in front of the family’s Arlene Drive home in Monroe Township, according to the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case. Anderko’s wife and children were home at the time of the attack, neighbors said.

A spokesman for the prosecutor’s office and Police Chief Thomas Bryan declined to comment on the details of the attack. In a statement, Acting Prosecutor Andrew Carey said the fire started around 4 a.m and caused substantial damage to the home, but was brought under control within 15 minutes.

The state Attorney General’s Office, which began monitoring Edison police after a series of Star-Ledger reports revealed dysfunction and accusations of misconduct within Edison internal affairs last year, will also assist in the probe, spokesman Paul Loriquet said.

Capt. Bruce Polkowitz, president of Edison’s Superior Officers Association, said he had never before heard of a direct attack on the home of a police officer. Polkowitz declined to address the investigation but said the thoughts of fellow officers are with Anderko.

"Our hearts go out to Mark and his family," he said. "The PBA collectively and the police department are here to do whatever we can to assist his family and help get to the bottom of who was behind this horrific, cowardly act."

Neighbor Walter Wisnowski said he woke to the sound of a car door closing and a dog barking around 4 a.m. Monday. Wisnowski went back to sleep but awoke again when police strobe lights flashed through his window.

When he looked outside again, Wisnowski found a roaring blaze in front of the Anderko family home. At one point, it seemed like the entire house was ablaze, he said.

Wisnowski spoke later today to Anderko, who said his wife was also awoken by the dog’s bark. Then, she spotted the flames.

"She saw fire, and they all went out the back," Wisnowski said.

Wisnowski said Anderko’s children sleep in rooms near the front of the house, close to where the fire started. Anderko is a close ally of Bryan, the Edison police chief, and is often tapped to serve as acting head of the department when Bryan is away. He was also one of several defendants named in a lawsuit filed earlier this year by Capt. Michael Palko, who accused Bryan and others of leading a campaign of harassment, retaliation and intimidation against him.

Late today, state PBA President Anthony Weiners issued a statement claiming his union will do whatever it can to help find the people behind the bombing. The reward has been offered through NJ Cop Shot, a program established several years ago after the murder of a Paterson police officer.

"Regardless of whether a gun, a knife or a firebomb, NJ Cop Shot stands ready to assist with the capture of those responsible," Weiners said.

Forum: Law Enforcement News
