The budget includes $3.3 million for the first of two new State Police classes of recruits planned for 2013. The classes will begin with 150 recruits and cost about $3.5 million each, according to the budget. About 115 recruits are expected to graduate.

The first class is scheduled to begin the academy in April 2013 and graduate in October 2013. The second class, which will require additional funding in the fiscal 2014 budget, is expected to begin in June 2013 and graduate in December 2013.

With the new hiring comes a lingering problem: finding ways to attract and retain more black candidates to the force. Chiesa said he has been appearing at recruitment events to help drum up interest, but insisted standards will not be lowered to alleviate the problem.
